hi! I'm Carly

Founder of The Finance Plan, entrepreneur, marathon runner, and world traveler (20 countries and counting!).

The mission behind The Finance Plan is simple:

to educate people about money.

Armed with nothing, but passion, I’m making it my life mission to challenge the status quo and help others to fight for financial independence.

With coffee in hand and my laptop I took what I learned studying Finance and my personal experience as a millennial to create Best Money Class Ever, a 4–week personal finance class taught live in Austin, Tx and online across the world.

The Finance Plan is the roadmap you’ve been looking for with money.

How did this all start?

If you’re like me, you made all the right moves growing up, but things didn’t go exactly as planned when you entered the real world.

I was Student Body President, editor of the high school newspaper, and accepted into McCombs School of Business at UT- the U.S. News and World Report #5 ranked business school.

In college I chatted with the CEO of Dell and interned with an Inc. 500 company becoming a top sales rep working summers in San Francisco, Denver, Kansas City, and Long Island selling home security systems.

I was even on a reality tv show.

And then it happened. I graduated at the start of the Great Recession right when the financial market crashed in 2008.

I remember walking into my financial professors office saying, “What should I do about this whole job-thing?”

Reality struck that the economy didn’t really care about my resume.

Plus, when I graduated I owed over $35,000 in student loans and a car loan.

With a lot of hustle and good ol’ fashioned hard work by age 26 I was debt-free with a nest egg of over $100,000.

If I could pay off debt and build savings at a young age, then I knew anyone can with a little education and a plan.

I starting interviewing to become a financial advisor, but realized managing money isn’t just about having a diversified portfolio. It’s about having a diversified life.

Managing money is about being a bridesmaid in your best friend’s wedding, backpacking Asia, and having the ability to tackle an unexpected trip to the ER.

I created Best Money Class Ever because there wasn’t a class about money and life designed by a young adult for young adults.

Best Money Class Ever is a chance to learn how to get out of debt, invest, save for a rainy day, and plan for the fun things in life like buying a car, or home.

When I first started doing my class one guy said, “Carly, I need this class! I’ve been looking for something just like this.”

He went on and on saying, “I’ve got tons of student loans, I have literally no savings, and I’m living paycheck to paycheck!”

I said, “Sweet! I’ll see ya at the next class.”

He said, “Well I can’t go. Your class is on the same night as my favorite happy hour.”

I really wanted to help him, but he simply did not want to miss his favorite happy hour.

I couldn’t believe it.

Months later, I thought, “why not offer the class…. wait for it… and have a happy hour!?”

The idea to grab a drink and talk about money was born.

No one talks about money, credit card debt, and student loans. It just doesn’t happen, so what better way to break the financial ice than over a beer or glass of wine.

Now Best Money Class Ever includes free drinks each week!
